What can you control?
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, And wisdom to know the difference. Take control of the things that are within your power and let go of those things that you cant.
It’s not every day that we start a blog with a karakia, and I really am not trying to reinforce the stereotype that CrossFit is a cult….however, this karakia (prayer) has been pretty apt for me in the past few years, and I’m hoping it will give you a parcel of wisdom that you can use in whatever manner you need it to.
The weather We are in for one of the coldest winters in a long time. If lasts weeks two degree mornings were any guide, its definitely time to pull out the thick socks and beanies. But we cannot change the weather. What we can control is the prep that we do the night before a morning class: having warm clothes ready and set so you can easily find your kit at 5:00 am. Have the keys in the same spot so there isn’t a mad dash to find the keys. Heck, have a coffee ready to roll. You cant control the weather, but you can control your prep. A friend of mine would often say: There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes.
Other people I am quite lucky that I am surrounded by amazing people and our Kaiarahi team are incredible. But it hasn’t always been sunshine and rainbows. Bullies and toxic people every now and then find themselves inside my circle, and as hard as you may try (holy heck I have tried hard), you are not likely to change negative people. What you can control is choosing who we let in our circles. I wrote a blog about auditing your circles, subtracting the negative and adding the positive, and that advice is just as apt now: If you see the persons name pop up on your incoming calls notification, do you get excited? Or do you sigh and decline the call? You cant control other people, but you can control your own actions. Cut the toxic out of your life and add some awesome happy people.
Your mood Sometimes factors outside of your control have a greater influence on your thoughts and feelings than your own intentions to have happy day. You may have started out with the plan to make today awesome and productive, but sometimes shit happens. You can’t control that, but you can choose to smile. The infectiousness of a smile will make you feel better and rub off on those around you. You can choose to workout. Adding one hour of kick arse CrossFit alongside our inspiring community is well within your control, and will absolutely make your mood better. This is a direct quote from one of my favourite people in the world, she came into the box and everything about her body language screamed “go away, ugh”. We went through the warm up, nothing. We went through the skill set, nothing. We started building up to heavy cleans and slowly, a smile appeared. Then she PB’d her clean and said “I was having a shitty day, but I feel better now”.
Take control of the things that are within your power and let go of those things that you cant.
Keep training, stay awesome, and we’ll see you at the box.
